This is a question that I am asked frequently so let me clear this up.
Balance will occur when everything in our lives is in a state of homeostasis. Balance is also a temporary state and once you get there you won’t stay there for long.
We strive to find balance in our lives thinking that once we find the balance, everything will be ok but we were not meant to stay in a balanced state.
Think of it this way. When you are standing still, your body is standing in a balanced state. It’s a comfortable place to be, but as long as you are standing in this balanced state, you are static—meaning you are not going anywhere. You must lift up a foot and take yourself out of balance in order to move forward. When you take your body out of balance, it is not long before it begins to make a correction by putting your foot forward to become balanced again.
Our lives work in very much the same way. In order to move forward, we move to a place where we are unbalanced. Sometimes this unbalanced state comes in the form of discomfort with our current situation (relationships, jobs), how our body is feeling (lack of energy, overweight) , illnesses, or a crisis in our life. Other times the state of unbalance comes from stepping out of our comfort zone to take conscious action toward our dreams.
It is important to strive for balance in our lives even though it is a temporary state. It is equally important to strive for harmony in our lives. Unlike balance, harmony comes with acceptance with the way things are now while we continue taking the steps to regain balance. Harmony can be a more permanent state. We can be in harmony with our lives and still have areas that are out of balance.
